How WhatsApp handles the profile picture size
WhatsApp's help page on editing your profile could not be read when this guide was checked, so the figures here are the widely published ones rather than confirmed requirements: a minimum of about 192 by 192 pixels to avoid a visibly poor picture, and no HD option for profile photos. A 500 by 500 pixel square is a comfortable export, sharp when the photo is opened full screen and small enough to survive compression.
The photo is a circle in every chat list, at around 50 pixels, and a larger circle at the top of a conversation, so the corners of the square never show. WhatsApp crops a rectangle to a centered square you can drag but not resize. Compression does the rest of the damage. The picture is stored as a small JPG, so PNG transparency is flattened, usually to white, and fine detail disappears. Use 1 bold shape, keep it inside a circle with roughly 50 pixels of clear space on the 500-pixel canvas, and avoid type smaller than a quarter of the canvas height. Matching the mark you use elsewhere keeps the account recognizable when a customer saves your number.
