About the 1:1 ratio

1:1 is the square. Width equals height, so the decimal is 1.0 and there is nothing to simplify: 1080 by 1080 pixels, 800 by 800 and 500 by 500 are all the same shape. It is the only ratio with no orientation, which is why platforms fall back to it for anything that has to fit a fixed slot, such as profile pictures, app icons and album art.

Instagram launched square-only in 2010 and 1:1 is still accepted everywhere: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads and X feed posts, carousel slides, and Pinterest (which prefers taller). Profile photos on every network are square uploads displayed as a circle. Spotify and Apple Music cover art is square at 3000 by 3000 pixels, and YouTube channel icons are 800 by 800.

Cropping from a square is symmetric. Going to 4:5 you either keep the full height and cut 20 percent of the width (a 1080 square becomes 864 by 1080) or keep the width and add 270 pixels of height. Going to 16:9 keeps 56 percent of the height. Common sizes: 1080 by 1080 for feed posts, 1200 by 1200 for a square link-preview fallback, 400 by 400 for X and LinkedIn profile pictures, 320 by 320 for the Instagram profile picture.

Questions about 1:1

  • Any size where width equals height: 1080 by 1080 for a feed post, 1200 by 1200 for a square link image, 800 by 800 for a YouTube channel icon, 400 by 400 for an X or LinkedIn profile picture. Pick the width the platform displays at and use the same number for the height.

  • Yes. Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Threads all display feed images at about 1080 pixels wide on phones, so 1080 by 1080 is the smallest size that stays sharp. Larger squares are downscaled and recompressed on upload; smaller ones are upscaled and look soft.

  • Every platform crops profile pictures to a circle, and a circle needs a square to sit in. Upload a 1:1 image with the subject centred and nothing important near the corners, since the corners are cut. Instagram shows the picture at 320 by 320 pixels, X and LinkedIn at 400 by 400.
