How Google Business Profile handles the cover photo size

Google describes the cover photo as the image you would like shown at the top of the profile, and is explicit that setting one does not guarantee it appears first. The general photo rules apply: JPG or PNG between 10 KB and 5 MB, at least 250 by 250 pixels, 720 by 720 recommended. No cover-specific size is published. The profile renders the slot at 16:9, and 1024 by 576 pixels is the common export for it.

Because the slot is 16:9, any other shape is cropped from the center. A 1920 by 1080 upload is fine and looks sharper on a desktop; a 4:5 portrait loses more than half its height. Thumbnail versions of the cover appear small and with rounded corners in several places, so keep the subject away from the extreme edges even though there are no fixed interface bands to avoid.

Google favors real photographs of the storefront, the interior or the product over designed graphics, and its guidelines ask for images that are in focus, well lit and free of significant alteration. A cover that is a logo with type across it is often quietly replaced by a customer photo. Set the logo in its own slot at 720 by 720 and let the cover be a photograph.
