About the 16:9 ratio
16:9 is 16 units wide for every 9 tall, decimal 1.78. It is the HD video standard, so 1280 by 720, 1920 by 1080, 2560 by 1440 and 3840 by 2160 pixels are all exactly 16:9. Nearly every TV, laptop and desktop monitor sold since 2010 is this shape, as is a phone turned sideways.
For social it is the video and thumbnail ratio: YouTube videos and thumbnails (1280 by 720), LinkedIn and Facebook video, X in-feed images (which display best at 16:9), Twitch, and presentation slides. It is the wrong shape for a feed image on Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn, where it shows at little more than half the height of a 4:5 post at the same width. Blog and website hero images are often 16:9 because they match the browser viewport.
16:9 crops badly to portrait. To 4:5 you keep only 45 percent of the width (a 1920 by 1080 frame becomes 864 by 1080); to 1:1 you keep 56 percent; to 9:16 you keep 32 percent. To 4:3 you keep 75 percent, and to 1.91:1 or 2:1 you lose only 7 to 11 percent of the height. Common sizes: 1920 by 1080, 1280 by 720, 1366 by 768, 2560 by 1440, 3840 by 2160.
Questions about 16:9
1920 by 1080 (Full HD) is the reference size; 1280 by 720 (HD, and YouTube's thumbnail size), 2560 by 1440 (QHD) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) are the same ratio. For any width, multiply by 0.5625 to get the height: 1200 wide is 675 tall, 1600 wide is 900 tall.
Yes, exactly. Both numbers divide by 120, giving 16 and 9. 1366 by 768, a common laptop resolution, is not quite 16:9 (it works out to 1.779 rather than 1.778) but is treated as 16:9 everywhere. 1920 by 1200, by contrast, is 16:10.
You cannot scale it; you have to crop or redesign. At 1080 pixels tall a 16:9 frame is 1920 wide and a 4:5 frame is 864 wide, so you keep 45 percent of the width. If the subject is centred, crop the middle 864 pixels and export at 1080 by 1350. Otherwise place the 16:9 image on a 4:5 canvas with a background and text above and below.
