How X (Twitter) handles the profile picture size
400 by 400 pixels is the widely published size for an X profile picture, and the 2 MB file limit is the figure X's help pages have carried for years. Neither could be confirmed directly: the help page cited here could not be fetched when this entry was checked, so both are reported rather than verified. The safe zone is zero on all four sides because the picture is masked to a circle and the corners of the square are discarded.
It is drawn small and often: a circle beside every post in the timeline, smaller again in replies and notifications. A logo mark or a face that fills the circle survives that; a wordmark, a group photo or anything with fine detail does not. Leave a margin of roughly a tenth of the width inside the square so the mask does not clip the mark.
Upload a square at 400 pixels or larger from the original artwork, PNG for a flat logo and JPG for a photograph, and use the same file you place as the logo on a 1080 by 1350 post so the two match. Animated GIFs are accepted as profile pictures on some accounts but are shown as a still frame in most places, which makes them a poor choice for a brand mark.
Questions about X profile picture sizes
400 by 400 pixels, capped at 2 MB, are the figures X has published for years, though the help page could not be fetched to confirm them here. The image is masked to a circle, so keep the mark centred with a margin inside the square.
A mark. The picture is drawn as a small circle beside every post and smaller still in replies, where a wordmark becomes an unreadable smear. Put the mark in the circle and let the display name carry the words, which is what it is there for.
