How X (Twitter) handles the header size

The header is the wide strip across the top of an X profile, 1500 by 500 pixels at 3:1. X's help page on uploading profile photos and headers could not be fetched when this entry was checked, so that size is the widely published figure rather than a confirmed one. It has been stable for years and matches the shape the profile is drawn at on both the web and the apps.

Your profile picture is drawn as a circle over the lower left of the header, and on narrower windows the strip is cropped at the sides and shortened at the bottom where the profile details begin. The safe zone below reflects that: leave the left 250 pixels and the bottom 130 clear, keep 60 pixels off the top, and put anything you need read in the upper right two thirds.

Because the strip is only 500 pixels tall against 1500 wide, it holds a single line, a simple pattern or one product shot. A design lifted from a 1080 by 1350 post loses almost everything to a 3:1 crop, so start from a wide canvas. Export PNG when the header carries type, since X re-compresses uploads and thin lettering on a photographic background is the first casualty.

Questions about X header sizes

  • 1500 by 500 pixels at 3:1. X's help pages could not be fetched to confirm this, so it is the widely published figure. It is cropped at the sides on narrow windows and partly covered at the lower left by the profile picture.

  • The lower left corner, where the circular profile picture overlaps the strip, and the bottom edge, where the display name and bio start. Keep roughly the left 250 pixels and bottom 130 pixels of a 1500 by 500 header free of anything important.
