How YouTube handles the community post size

YouTube's help page on creating posts says you can attach up to 10 images as JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP at up to 16 MB each, and suggests a 1:1 ratio because that is how images are shown in the feed. It names no pixel size. 1080 by 1080 is the square that matches the width of a phone screen and the square placements on other networks, so one file covers all of them.

A single image post is displayed as a square whatever you upload, so a portrait or 16:9 file is cut from the center and the rest appears only when a viewer taps to expand it. Sets of images are swiped, and they are square too. That makes the safe area the whole canvas when you upload a square, and only the central square when you do not.

Community posts live in the Community tab and surface in subscribers' home feeds, where polls, quizzes and images get more taps than plain text. The habitual mistake is reposting the 16:9 video thumbnail: the square crop takes the middle and the title text at the edges disappears. Export a square version of the design instead, or crop the thumbnail with its subject centered.

Questions about YouTube community post sizes

  • A 1080 by 1080 pixel square. YouTube's help page suggests a 1:1 ratio because the feed renders images as squares, accepts up to 10 images per post as JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP at 16 MB each, and states no pixel size of its own.

  • Yes, to a square. The full image is shown when a viewer taps to expand the post, but the version everyone scrolls past is the central 1:1 slice of what you uploaded. Posting a square file avoids the crop and the guesswork entirely.
