How YouTube handles the channel banner size

YouTube's channel branding page sets a minimum of 2048 by 1152 pixels at 16:9 for the banner, recommends 2560 by 1440 for the best result across devices, caps the file at 6 MB, and states a safe area for text and logos of 1235 by 338 pixels at that minimum size. Scaled up to the recommended 2560 by 1440 canvas, the same safe area measures 1546 by 423 pixels, which is the rectangle the bands here mark out.

The safe area is small because the banner is cropped differently everywhere. A television shows the whole 2560 by 1440 image, a desktop browser shows a wide but short strip, and a phone shows only the central band. So the full canvas is a background and the 1546 by 423 rectangle in the middle, 507 pixels in from each side and about 508 from the top and bottom, is where the channel name, the tagline and the posting schedule belong.

The habitual mistake is designing the banner as a wide desktop image with the wordmark near the left edge, which phones cut away entirely. Fill the outer area with a color, texture or photograph that can afford to lose its edges, and step through the upload preview for television, desktop and mobile before saving. YouTube also asks that you not bake shadows, borders or frames into the file.

Questions about YouTube banner sizes

  • 2560 by 1440 pixels at 16:9 is YouTube's recommendation, with 2048 by 1152 the minimum and a 6 MB file cap. Only the central safe area, 1235 by 338 pixels at the minimum size and 1546 by 423 on the recommended canvas, is visible on every device.

  • Phones show only a short strip cut from the center of the banner, and desktop browsers show a wider but equally short one. Anything outside the central safe area is hidden on at least one device. Move text into that rectangle and treat the rest of the canvas as background.
