About 1080 x 1080

1080 by 1080 is the shape to pick when one file has to serve several places at once. It posts uncropped on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X and Threads, and a YouTube community post shows it in full where a portrait upload would be cut. The trade is height: a square takes 20 percent less room in a phone feed than a 4:5 post of the same width.

Square also decides the rest of a carousel. Instagram applies the ratio of the first slide to every slide that follows, so a 1080 by 1080 opener forces the other nine into squares whether they were designed that way or not. Choose the shape before slide 1 is finished rather than after.

Questions

  • When the image is going to more than one place. A square posts uncropped on X, in a YouTube community post and in the Pinterest feed, none of which handle 4:5 well. For an Instagram-only post, 1080 by 1350 pixels gives you 25 percent more screen.
