How Pinterest handles the board cover size
A board cover is not a separate upload. It is one of the pins already saved to that board, picked from the board's edit screen, and Pinterest draws it as a square tile on your profile beside 2 or 3 smaller thumbnails. Pinterest's help page on editing a board explains how to change the cover but states no pixel size or ratio, so 600 by 600 pixels is the widely published figure rather than an official one.
Save a dedicated 600 by 600 square to the board and choose it as the cover and it fills the tile with nothing left over. Choose a 2:3 pin instead and Pinterest takes a centered square that you can drag up or down, which quietly removes the title band from the top of most pins. The tile is drawn small and with rounded corners, so keep the board name or icon away from the extreme edges.
Matching covers are the cheapest way to make a profile look deliberate: one background color per topic, the board name in the same typeface, the same margin. Because the cover is still a live pin, it has to make sense to someone who finds it in search on its own, so name the topic rather than shipping a decorative pattern.

Pinterest publishes no size for it. The cover renders as a square tile, so save a 600 by 600 pixel square to the board and select it. A taller pin used as a cover is cropped to a centered square that you can drag but not resize.
Open the board, choose Edit, then the plus icon on the cover, and pick any pin already saved to that board. Drag to set the square crop and save. Pinterest's help page covers the steps but gives no dimensions, and the option is not available on every platform.
