How Facebook handles the group cover size
Facebook's help page for group covers gives a recommended size of 1640 by 856 pixels, or a 1.9:1 ratio, and warns that people visiting the group on a phone may not see the whole image, so important information should stay out of the grey areas the upload tool shades. That grey border is the only crop guide Facebook gives you, and it is worth reading before you publish rather than after.
In practice that means keeping the subject inside the middle 80 percent of the width, roughly 160 pixels in from each side, and 60 pixels clear of the top and bottom. Unlike a Page cover there is no profile picture sitting over a corner: the group name and member count are drawn below the image, so the lower left is usable.
A group cover is not the same shape as a Page cover, which is why reusing one stretches or trims the other. It is close enough to 1.91:1 that a 1200 by 628 link image can stand in when you are in a hurry, at some cost in sharpness on a desktop screen. Facebook compresses covers noticeably, so export PNG when the design carries text, and check the phone view once it is live.
Questions about Facebook group cover sizes
1640 by 856 pixels, or about 1.9:1, according to Facebook's help page. The same page warns that phone visitors may not see the full image, so keep the subject inside the central 80 percent of the width and watch the grey preview area during upload.
No. A group cover is 1640 by 856 at roughly 1.9:1, while a Page cover renders at 16:9 on computers and 2.4:1 on phones. One file used for both is either stretched or trimmed, so export the two separately from the same artwork.
