How Facebook handles the link preview size

When a link is posted, the preview picture comes from the og:image tag on the page, not from anything uploaded to Facebook. Meta's sharing documentation asks for at least 1200 by 630 pixels for high resolution screens, gives 600 by 315 as the minimum for the large card format, 200 by 200 as the absolute floor and 8 MB as the file cap, and says to stay as close to 1.91:1 as possible so the card fills without cropping.

Any other shape is cut to 1.91:1 from the centre, which costs a square image 48 percent of its height. Some surfaces, including Messenger and certain mobile link types, fall back to a small square thumbnail instead, so a subject that still reads inside a centred square is worth building in. That is what the 40 pixel margin in the safe zone below is for.

Personal posts can no longer override the preview picture, and Pages can only edit it once the domain is verified, so the og:image on your own site is the thing to get right. Facebook caches what it fetched, so run the URL through Meta's Sharing Debugger after you change the tag. The same 1200 by 630 file also serves LinkedIn, X, Slack and WhatsApp previews, which makes it the one landscape asset worth keeping alongside your 1080 by 1350 posts.

Questions about Facebook link image sizes

  • 1200 by 630 pixels at 1.91:1. Meta's sharing documentation gives 600 by 315 as the minimum for the large card, 200 by 200 as the absolute floor and an 8 MB file cap, and crops anything that is not close to 1.91:1 from the centre.

  • Fix the og:image tag on the page, then paste the URL into Meta's Sharing Debugger and choose Scrape Again. Facebook caches the first image it fetched, and a personal post has no manual override, so clearing the cache is the only route.
