How Facebook handles the page cover size

Facebook's help page says a Page cover is displayed at 16:9 on computers and 2.4:1 on phones, must be at least 400 by 150 pixels, and loads fastest as an sRGB JPG at 851 by 315 pixels under 100 KB. Those two display ratios are the whole problem. 1640 by 924 is the 16:9 shape at twice the old 820 pixel desktop width, so the computer view gets the full frame and the phone view crops into it.

The phone shape is wider, not narrower, so what it removes is height: 1640 divided by 2.4 leaves 683 pixels, which takes 120 pixels off the top and 120 off the bottom of the canvas. Keep the logo, the strapline and any phone number inside that middle band. The 851 by 315 file Facebook mentions is a loading speed suggestion rather than a quality one, and it looks soft on any current screen.

The profile picture overlaps the cover by roughly 40 pixels at the lower left on phones and sits over the same corner on desktop, so that corner is not a place to put anything you need read. Facebook re-compresses covers heavily; PNG holds text edges together better than JPG. This is the Page cover, though a personal profile cover behaves the same way.

Questions about Facebook cover photo sizes

  • 1640 by 924 pixels. Facebook's help page states the cover shows at 16:9 on computers and 2.4:1 on phones with a 400 by 150 minimum, so a 16:9 export at that size covers both once you keep the important part inside the middle band.

  • Phones display the cover at 2.4:1, a wider shape than the 16:9 used on computers, so roughly 120 pixels are trimmed from the top and the same from the bottom of a 1640 by 924 upload. Move text toward the vertical centre.

  • It is what the help page suggests for the fastest loading file, not the sharpest one. On a retina screen a 851 pixel wide image is scaled up and looks soft, which is why 1640 by 924 at the same 16:9 shape is the more useful export.
