How Facebook handles the profile picture size
Facebook draws a Page or personal profile picture as a circle, about 170 pixels across on a computer, 128 on a phone and roughly 40 pixels beside every post and comment. Uploading 720 by 720 pixels gives the picture enough resolution for the full size view someone gets when they tap it, and for retina screens at the larger display sizes. The safe zone is zero on all four sides because the crop is a circle rather than a rectangle: the corners of the square are simply never shown.
The upload tool takes a centred square out of any rectangle and only lets you drag it, so start from a square file. Leave a margin of roughly a tenth of the width inside the edge, and keep a wordmark out of it entirely, since the circle clips the first and last letters. For a Page this picture rides alongside every post you publish at about 40 pixels, which is the size that should decide between a mark and a wordmark.
Export PNG for a flat logo to avoid JPG artefacts around hard edges, and use the same source artwork you place on a 1080 by 1350 post so the mark matches. Facebook's help page on changing a profile picture covers the steps but no longer lists pixel sizes, so the display figures here are the long published ones rather than a current official spec.
Questions about Facebook profile picture sizes
A square of 720 by 720 pixels is a safe export. Facebook shows it as a circle at about 170 pixels on a computer, 128 on a phone and 40 beside posts, and keeps a larger copy for the full size view, so a bigger square costs nothing.
No. Pages and personal profiles both render the picture inside a circle, so the corners of your square upload are never visible in the interface. The full square only appears when someone opens the photo itself from your profile.
