How Facebook handles the story size

Facebook Stories use the same 9:16 frame as Instagram, 1080 by 1920 pixels on a phone. Meta's Ads Guide gives 1440 by 2560 as the recommended resolution for Story creative, a 500 pixel minimum width, JPG or PNG and a 30 MB cap. A Page can publish one Story to Facebook and a connected Instagram account at the same time, so a single file covers both apps.

The interface bands are the same on both, too. Leave the top 250 pixels and the bottom 340 pixels of the canvas clear of text and logos so the account name, the progress bar and the reply and reaction controls do not sit on top of them, and stay about 64 pixels in from each side. Meta asks for more on paid Story placements, roughly 14 percent at the top, 35 percent at the bottom and 6 percent at the sides, because an ad adds a call to action.

Images that are not 9:16 are placed on a background rather than cropped, so a 1080 by 1350 feed post arrives smaller than the screen with a band above and below. That is fine if it is deliberate: shrink it into the middle, add a headline in the clear space above and it looks designed rather than recycled. Desktop viewers see the frame in a narrower column, which punishes small type twice.

Questions about Facebook story sizes

  • 1080 by 1920 pixels at 9:16. Meta's Ads Guide names 1440 by 2560 as the recommended resolution for Story creative, accepts widths from 500 pixels and caps the file at 30 MB in JPG or PNG. Keep text out of the top 250 and bottom 340 pixels.

  • Yes. Both apps use the same 9:16 frame and the same interface bands, and a Page connected to an Instagram account can publish to both at once. One 1080 by 1920 export works without changes to the crop or the safe zone.
