How Instagram handles the square post size

A square post is 1080 by 1080 pixels. Instagram shows it at the full column width of the feed, the same width as a portrait post but 270 pixels shorter, so it scrolls past faster. Meta's Ads Guide sets the same 500 pixel minimum width and 30 MB cap for square as for any other feed image, and square sits comfortably inside the accepted range between 1.91:1 and 4:5.

The profile grid is where square costs you. The tile is 3:4, taller than the image, so Instagram zooms in until the height fills and cuts about 135 pixels off each side. Anything that runs edge to edge, such as a full-width rule, a border or a wordmark, loses its ends. Keep the design inside the middle 810 pixels of width and the grid tile still works.

Square remains the right pick when one file has to serve several places without a second export, because Facebook, LinkedIn, X and Threads all display 1:1 uncropped. If the post is made for Instagram alone, 1080 by 1350 gives the same width plus the extra height at no cost.

Questions about Instagram square post sizes

  • Yes, if the image also goes somewhere else. Square is never cropped in the feed and works on every other network without a re-export. For Instagram on its own, a 4:5 post occupies 25 percent more screen at the same width.

  • About 135 pixels from the left and 135 from the right, because the grid tile is taller than it is wide and Instagram scales the image to fill the height. The centre 810 pixels of width is what survives on your profile.
