How Instagram handles the reel size

Reels are vertical video at 9:16, played back at 1080 by 1920 pixels on a phone. Meta's Ads Guide recommends 1440 by 2560, MP4 or MOV with H.264 video and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps or higher, a 4 GB file cap and a minimum width of 250 pixels for clips under 30 seconds or 500 pixels above that. A clip that is not 9:16 is letterboxed, so a horizontal recording plays as a small strip in the middle of the screen.

The player covers more of a Reel than of a Story. Meta's guidance for Reels creative is to keep text and logos out of at least the top 14 percent, the bottom 35 percent and 6 percent at each side. In practice the account name, caption and audio strip stack up from the bottom and the like, comment and share buttons run down the right edge from roughly 900 pixels down, which is why the safe zone here is wider on the right than on the left.

Organic Reels run to 3 minutes; the 15 minute figure in the Ads Guide applies to paid placements. Export at 30 frames per second with a bitrate around 8 to 12 Mbps, because Instagram re-encodes hard and a thin source turns to mush.

Questions about Instagram reel sizes

  • 1080 by 1920 pixels at 9:16, MP4 or MOV, H.264 video with stereo AAC audio. Meta's Ads Guide recommends 1440 by 2560 and caps the file at 4 GB. Instagram scales playback to the phone either way, so the extra pixels mainly buy compression headroom.

  • Up to 3 minutes when you upload it yourself. Meta's Ads Guide allows Reels ads up to 15 minutes, which is a paid placement limit rather than an organic one. Short clips loop, which suits a demo or a before and after.

  • The right edge from roughly the middle of the frame down holds the like, comment, share and more controls, and the bottom carries the account name, caption and audio strip. Meta asks for at least 14 percent clear at the top, 35 percent at the bottom and 6 percent at each side.
