How Instagram handles the portrait post size

1080 by 1350 pixels is the 4:5 portrait shape at the width Instagram renders feed images. It was the tallest single image the feed showed in full until Instagram added 3:4 uploads in 2025; it is still the tallest shape Facebook, LinkedIn and Threads show uncropped, so one 4:5 export covers all four. Meta's Ads Guide names 1440 by 1800 as the recommended resolution for the same 4:5 ratio, sets a 500 pixel minimum width, a 30 MB file cap and a 1 percent ratio tolerance, and lists 4:5 and 1.91:1 as the two ends of the accepted range.

Nothing is cropped in the feed itself. The crop happens on your profile, where the grid tile is 3:4, a little narrower than 4:5, so a 4:5 post loses a strip of about 34 pixels from the left and the same from the right. That strip is where the ends of a wide headline or a corner logo often sit, which is why a post that reads fine in the feed can look clipped on the grid. Instagram lets you choose the grid crop per post, but the default is centered. How a row of these posts reads together is the job of Instagram feed design: a pattern of looks that repeats, so the grid keeps its shape as you post.

Export JPG at quality 85 to 95 for photographs and PNG for flat graphics with text, since Instagram re-encodes everything and thin light type is the first thing to smear. Creobee makes every post at 1080 by 1350 for this reason, and the other sizes in this reference are described relative to it.

Questions about Instagram post sizes

  • 1080 by 1350 pixels, a 4:5 portrait. Meta's Ads Guide recommends 1440 by 1800 at the same ratio and accepts anything from 500 pixels wide, capped at 30 MB. Square, 1.91:1 landscape and, since 2025, 3:4 (1080 by 1440) also display without cropping; anything taller than 3:4 is trimmed.

  • The grid tile is 3:4, a little narrower than 4:5, so Instagram trims about 34 pixels from each side of a 1080 by 1350 post to fill it. Keep headlines and logos away from the left and right edges, or pick the grid crop yourself in the post options before publishing.

  • It re-encodes every upload, so some loss is unavoidable. Uploading at exactly 1080 pixels wide avoids a second resampling step on top of that. Wider files are scaled down to 1080 for display, and narrower files are scaled up and look soft.
