How Instagram handles the story size
A Story fills the phone screen at 9:16, and 1080 by 1920 pixels is the size that maps to it one to one. Meta's Ads Guide names 1440 by 2560 as the recommended resolution for Story creative, a 500 pixel minimum width, JPG or PNG under 30 MB and a 1 percent ratio tolerance. An image that is not 9:16 is not cropped; it is centred on a blurred or solid background, which shrinks it.
The safe zone is the whole difference between a Story and a feed post. Instagram's widely published text and logo guidance is to leave the top 250 pixels and the bottom 340 pixels of a 1080 by 1920 canvas clear, because the progress bar and account name sit at the top and the reply field sits at the bottom. Meta's Ads Guide asks for more on paid placements: roughly 14 percent at the top, 35 percent at the bottom and 6 percent at each side, which is about 269 and 672 pixels on the same canvas, because an ad adds a call to action button.
The usual mistake is posting a 1080 by 1350 feed image straight to a Story and letting Instagram scale it. Pinch it down into the middle band instead and put the headline above it.
Questions about Instagram story sizes
Keep text and logos out of the top 250 pixels and the bottom 340 pixels, and about 64 pixels in from each side. That leaves a working area of roughly 950 by 1330 pixels. Story ads need more room at the bottom because of the call to action button.
No, it shrinks it and fills the rest of the frame with a blurred or solid background. A 4:5 image ends up about 30 percent smaller than the screen. Rebuild on a 9:16 canvas if you want the design to reach the edges.
Yes. Phones with taller screens still render Stories at 9:16 and downscale to the display, and Instagram re-encodes whatever you send. Meta recommends 1440 by 2560 for a little more headroom against compression, but the visible result is close to identical.
