How Instagram handles the carousel size

A carousel holds up to 20 images or clips and they all share one ratio: whatever the first slide uses. Drop a square in among portraits and the portraits are cropped to square without a prompt. Export every slide at 1080 by 1350 pixels and the whole set plays at 4:5, the tallest shape that also posts uncropped to Facebook, LinkedIn and Threads, under the same 30 MB and 500 pixel minimums Meta's Ads Guide sets for single feed images.

The cover slide is also your grid tile, so it takes the 3:4 crop and loses a thin strip on each side. Slide numbers, arrows and any cue that says keep swiping belong inside the frame rather than against an edge. If the first slide is a title card, keep the title inside the middle 1010 pixels of width so it still reads on the profile.

Continuous carousels, where one wide picture runs across several slides, need every slide cut from one strip at identical pixel sizes: three 4:5 slides come from a 3240 by 1350 image. The usual failure is a design tool exporting slides a pixel or two apart in height, which shifts the seams. Videos can sit in the same carousel and are cropped to the set ratio too.

Questions about Instagram carousel sizes

  • 1080 by 1350 pixels for all of them. Instagram applies the first slide's ratio to every slide that follows, so a single odd size gets cropped. Square works too if the whole set is square. Keep the export sizes identical to the pixel.

  • Design one wide canvas and cut it into equal slides: 3240 by 1350 pixels gives three 4:5 slides. Export at exactly the same height, keep the cut points on whole pixels, and upload in order so the seams line up when someone swipes.
