How Web and email handles the og image size
The Open Graph protocol at ogp.me defines og:image along with og:image:width, og:image:height, og:image:type and og:image:alt, but recommends no pixel size whatsoever. The size comes from the platforms reading the tag. Meta's sharing guidance asks for images of at least 1200 by 630 pixels, as close to 1.91:1 as possible so the card displays without cropping, sets 600 by 315 as the minimum for a large card and 200 by 200 as the absolute floor, and caps the file at 8 MB.
Every reader crops a little differently. Facebook and LinkedIn render close to 1.91:1, X's summary_large_image card is nearer 2:1, and WhatsApp, iMessage and some list views fall back to a square thumbnail cut from the center. One file survives all 3 if the title and mark sit well inside the frame and the design still reads inside a centered square.
Declare og:image:width and og:image:height in the markup so the first share renders the large card instead of a thumbnail; without them a platform may fetch the image asynchronously and show a small card once. Use an absolute URL, keep the file small for speed, and change the file name when you change the design, because every platform caches by URL. A 4:5 post does not work here; the card is landscape.
Questions about open graph image sizes
1200 by 630 pixels at about 1.91:1, the size Meta asks for and the one X, LinkedIn and messaging apps render well. The minimum for a large card is 600 by 315 and the file must stay under 8 MB. Keep the subject inside a centered square for apps that show square thumbnails.
No. 1200 by 628 and 1200 by 630 both sit inside every reader's tolerance, and larger multiples of the same ratio work too. What matters is staying close to 1.91:1 and above the 600 by 315 minimum, or the platform falls back to a small thumbnail card.
Either the image is below 600 by 315 pixels, the og:image:width and og:image:height tags are missing so the platform has not measured it yet, or the URL is relative or blocked. Fix the tags, use an absolute URL, then re-scrape the page with the platform's debugger.
