About the 9:16 ratio

9:16 is the portrait form of 16:9: 9 units wide for every 16 tall, decimal 0.5625, so the image is nearly twice as tall as it is wide. It is the shape of a phone held upright, which is why 1080 by 1920 pixels is the size for Instagram Stories and Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Facebook Stories, Snapchat and Pinterest video pins.

Because the app's own interface sits on top of the content, each platform reserves the top and bottom for its controls: the progress bar, account name and reply box on Stories; captions, buttons and counters along the right edge and bottom on Reels and TikTok. Keep text inside the central 1080 by 1350 area, which is also the part of a Reel that appears when it is shown in the feed at 4:5.

Cropping 9:16 to 4:5 cuts 30 percent of the height (1920 to 1350 at 1080 wide); to 1:1 cuts 44 percent; to 16:9 keeps only 32 percent of the height, which is why vertical video looks tiny on a TV. Common sizes: 1080 by 1920, 720 by 1280, 1440 by 2560 and 2160 by 3840 for vertical 4K.

Questions about 9:16

  • 1080 by 1920 is the standard, used by Instagram Stories and Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Facebook Stories. 720 by 1280 is the same ratio at HD, 1440 by 2560 at QHD and 2160 by 3840 for vertical 4K. Multiply the width by 1.778 to get the height.

  • Not at full height. The feed accepts portraits up to 3:4 (and 4:5 is the safest), so a 9:16 image is cropped to that and loses 25 to 30 percent of its height. Post the 9:16 version to Stories or as a Reel, and export a separate 1080 by 1350 crop for the feed.

  • Yes. 1080 divided by 1920 is 0.5625, which is 9 divided by 16; both numbers share a factor of 120. It is the same ratio as 16:9 rotated 90 degrees, so any 16:9 size turned on its side (720 by 1280, 1440 by 2560) is also 9:16.
