How Threads handles the post image size

Meta's Threads documentation lists the image rules the app itself enforces: JPEG and PNG only, an 8 MB cap, a minimum width of 320 pixels and a maximum of 1440 with anything outside that range rescaled, an sRGB color space and a ratio limit of 10:1. There is no published recommended size and Threads has no help page for image dimensions, so the practical answer is the shape the feed treats best.

That shape is 4:5. Threads renders a single image at the column width at its own ratio, so a portrait fills more of the screen than a square and nothing is cropped, and 1080 by 1350 pixels is the file most people already have from their other feeds. Posts carrying several images become a sideways-scrolling row of tiles that share the height of the first one, so keep a multi-image post to a single ratio or the set looks ragged.

Because Threads stores up to 1440 wide, a 1440 by 1800 export is kept at full size, though phones display close to 1080 either way. Set type at 36 pixels or larger: the desktop column is narrow and Threads recompresses on upload. Creobee makes posts at 1080 by 1350, so the same file and caption go to Threads as they are.

Questions about Threads post sizes

  • 1080 by 1350 pixels at 4:5 displays in full and takes the most vertical space in the feed. Meta's Threads documentation accepts JPEG and PNG under 8 MB, rescales anything outside 320 to 1440 pixels wide and allows ratios up to 10:1, but publishes no single recommended size.

  • A single image is shown at its own ratio and is not cropped. In a multi-image post the tiles scroll sideways and share the height of the first image, so mixed ratios are resized rather than trimmed, which makes a set of different shapes look uneven.
