About the 4:5 ratio

4:5 is a portrait ratio: for every 4 units wide, 5 tall, so the decimal is 0.8 and the height is 25 percent more than the width. 1080 by 1350 pixels reduces to 4:5 exactly because both numbers divide by 270. Until 2025 it was the tallest ratio Instagram showed in the feed without cropping, which is how 1080 by 1350 became the default export size for feed posts; Instagram now also accepts 3:4 (1080 by 1440), but 4:5 is still the tallest shape that Facebook, LinkedIn and Threads show in full.

The same ratio works on Facebook, LinkedIn and Threads, which all show portrait images up to 4:5 uncropped in the feed. Pinterest prefers taller pins (2:3), Stories and Reels are 9:16, and X crops tall portraits in the timeline, so 4:5 is a feed ratio rather than a universal one. Creobee makes every post at 1080 by 1350 for this reason. How a grid of 4:5 posts reads together, one pattern of looks that holds as you post, is the subject of Instagram feed design.

Cropping to neighbours: a 4:5 image loses 20 percent of its height going to 1:1 (1080 by 1350 becomes 1080 by 1080) and about 6 percent of its width in the 3:4 profile-grid tile. Going to 9:16 means adding height or cutting 30 percent of the width. Common sizes are 1080 by 1350, 1200 by 1500, 1600 by 2000 and 2160 by 2700 for a 2x export.

Questions about 4:5

  • Yes. 1080 divided by 1350 is 0.8, and 4 divided by 5 is 0.8. Both numbers share a factor of 270, so 1080x1350 reduces to 4:5 exactly. Any other multiple works too: 864 by 1080, 1200 by 1500 and 2160 by 2700 are all 4:5.

  • In the feed both are shown at the same width, so the 4:5 version is 25 percent taller, gets more screen and stays uncropped. Square is still safe; it just gives up height you could have used.

  • 1080 by 1350 pixels for a feed post, which is the size Instagram recommends. Scale it as needed: 864 by 1080, 1200 by 1500, 1600 by 2000 or 2160 by 2700 all reduce to 4:5. To find the height for any width, multiply the width by 1.25.
