How LinkedIn handles the personal banner size

LinkedIn's help page gives 1584 by 396 pixels as the recommended background image for a personal profile, in JPG or PNG under 8 MB. That is an exact 4:1 strip, the widest standard shape any of these placements uses, and it is the piece of profile real estate most people leave on the default blue.

Two things eat into it. Your profile photo is drawn over the lower left of the banner, and the name and headline block sits under it, so the bottom strip is partly covered on a computer. Phones show a narrower slice of the width, which is why a strapline that starts near the left edge gets clipped. The safe zone here reflects the rendered profile rather than a published LinkedIn figure: keep the message inside the middle and above the lower band.

One legible line works better than a collage. A short positioning sentence, a website address or a single product shot at the right holds up at the size the banner is actually drawn, which is under 400 pixels tall on any screen. If the design came from a 1080 by 1350 post, rebuild it rather than crop it, because a 4:1 slice out of a 4:5 canvas keeps almost nothing.

Questions about LinkedIn banner sizes

  • 1584 by 396 pixels, a 4:1 strip, in JPG or PNG under 8 MB, per LinkedIn's help page. That size covers retina screens, since the banner is drawn under 400 pixels tall in the interface and phones show a narrower slice of the width.

  • Over the lower left of the image on a computer, with the name and headline block directly beneath. Leave that corner empty and keep any text in the middle or right of the strip, above the bottom 120 pixels, so nothing you wrote ends up behind it.
