About the 3:4 ratio
3:4 is a portrait ratio: 3 units wide for every 4 tall, decimal 0.75, so the image is a third taller than it is wide. At 1080 pixels wide that is 1080 by 1440 pixels. It is the portrait orientation of 4:3, the shape of an iPad held upright and of most compact-camera and phone photos turned on their side.
Since January 2025 Instagram displays the profile grid as 3:4 tiles instead of squares, and it accepts 3:4 uploads for feed posts, which is what makes this ratio matter for social. A 4:5 post (1080 by 1350) shown as a 3:4 tile loses about 6 percent of its width, 34 pixels on each side, so keep logos and text away from the edges. A square post loses 25 percent of its width in the grid. Outside Instagram, 3:4 is the default photo shape on many Android phones and iPads, and the portrait form of a 4:3 slide.
Cropping from 3:4 to 4:5 cuts 6 percent of the height (1440 to 1350 at 1080 wide); to 1:1 cuts 25 percent of the height; to 9:16 cuts 25 percent of the width. Common sizes are 1080 by 1440, 768 by 1024, 1536 by 2048, 1620 by 2160 and 3024 by 4032, which is a 12 megapixel iPhone photo held upright.
Questions about 3:4
1080 by 1440 pixels is the common social size; 768 by 1024, 1536 by 2048 and 3024 by 4032 (a portrait iPhone photo) are the same ratio. Multiply the width by 1.333 to get the height, or the height by 0.75 to get the width.
Instagram changed the profile grid from square tiles to 3:4 tiles in January 2025. A 4:5 post loses about 6 percent of its width in the tile and a square post loses 25 percent, though both still open at full size. You can adjust the tile crop for each post from the grid's preview option.
Yes. Instagram extended feed uploads to 3:4 in 2025, so a 1080 by 1440 image posts as-is, shows at full height in the feed and fills the profile-grid tile exactly. Facebook and LinkedIn may trim it toward 4:5 in their feeds, and X crops taller portraits in the timeline, so 4:5 remains the safer cross-platform choice.
