About the 16:10 ratio

16:10 is 16 units wide for every 10 tall, decimal 1.6, which also reduces to 8:5. It sits between 16:9 (1.78) and 3:2 (1.5) and is close to the golden ratio (1.618), which is sometimes offered as the reason it looks balanced. It is a display ratio: 1920 by 1200 (WUXGA), 1440 by 900, 1680 by 1050, 1280 by 800 and 2560 by 1600 pixels are all 16:10.

Most laptops moved to 16:9 around 2010 and many have moved back: the MacBook Air (2560 by 1600), Dell XPS and many ThinkPads ship 16:10 panels because the extra 10 percent of height fits more of a document. Older MacBook Pro Retina displays at 2880 by 1800 are 16:10 too. Wallpapers and screenshots are the main reason to search for this ratio; no social placement uses it.

Cropping 16:10 to 16:9 cuts 10 percent of the height (1920 by 1200 becomes 1920 by 1080), so a 16:9 wallpaper on a 16:10 screen gets letterboxed or stretched. To 3:2 you cut 6 percent of the width; to 1.91:1 you cut 16 percent of the height. Common sizes: 1920 by 1200, 2560 by 1600, 1440 by 900, 1680 by 1050, 1280 by 800 and 2880 by 1800.

Questions about 16:10

  • 1920 by 1200 (WUXGA) is the most common, then 2560 by 1600, 1440 by 900, 1680 by 1050, 1280 by 800 and 2880 by 1800. Multiply the width by 0.625 to get the height, or the height by 1.6 to get the width. All of these also reduce to 8:5.

  • 16:10. Divide 1920 by 1200 and you get 1.6; 16:9 would be 1920 by 1080, which is 1.78. The two are often confused because both are 1920 wide. A 16:9 video played full-screen on a 1920 by 1200 display leaves a 60 pixel bar above and below.

  • Close but not equal. 16:10 is 1.6; the golden ratio is about 1.618. The difference is about 1 percent, small enough that many people describe 16:10 screens as golden-ratio displays, but they are not the same number. No mainstream screen uses the golden ratio exactly.
