About the 2:3 ratio

2:3 is a portrait ratio: 2 units wide for every 3 tall, decimal 0.667, so the image is half again as tall as it is wide. 1000 by 1500 pixels is the size Pinterest recommends for standard pins, and it is the ratio of a 35mm photo or a 4 by 6 inch print turned upright, since 3:2 on its side is 2:3.

Pinterest is the main social home for 2:3. Pins are displayed in columns of fixed width, so a taller pin takes more of the screen, and 2:3 is the tallest shape Pinterest shows in full without truncating the bottom. Instagram accepts a 2:3 upload but crops it to 3:4 (losing 11 percent of the height), so it is not a feed ratio. Movie posters (27 by 40 inches) and most paperback covers are within a few percent of 2:3.

Cropping 2:3 to 4:5 cuts 17 percent of the height (1000 by 1500 becomes 1000 by 1250); to 1:1 cuts 33 percent; to 9:16 cuts 16 percent of the width. A 3:2 camera frame rotated is already 2:3, so portrait photos need no crop at all. Common sizes: 1000 by 1500, 1080 by 1620, 1200 by 1800, 800 by 1200 and 4000 by 6000 from a 24 megapixel camera.

Questions about 2:3

  • 1000 by 1500 for a Pinterest pin, 1080 by 1620, 1200 by 1800, or 4000 by 6000 for a portrait photo from a 24 megapixel camera. Multiply the width by 1.5 to get the height. Anything shot on a 3:2 camera and turned upright is already 2:3.

  • Yes, it is the size Pinterest recommends for standard pins, and 2:3 is the tallest ratio it shows in full without cutting the bottom off in the feed. You can go larger at the same ratio (1200 by 1800) for sharper detail; Pinterest will downscale it. Pins taller than 2:3 get truncated.

  • Yes. 4 divided by 6 is 0.667, the same as 2 divided by 3, so a 4 by 6 inch photo print held upright is 2:3, and so are 8 by 12 and 20 by 30 inch prints. 5 by 7 (5:7, or 0.714) and 8 by 10 (4:5) are different shapes and will crop a 2:3 photo.
