Every size below reduces to 3:2. Each links to its own page.
| Size | Megapixels | Type | Used by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080 x 720 | 0.78 | photo | A 3:2 frame at 1080 pixels wide, where a camera photo lands when it is scaled for the web without changing shape |
| 1200 x 800 | 0.96 | photo | A 3:2 image at the width most blogs and stock sites deliver: light enough to load quickly, wide enough for a full-width article image on a laptop |
| 1620 x 1080 | 1.75 | photo | A 3:2 camera frame scaled to 1080 pixels tall, which is where photo-led blog posts and stock downloads usually end up |
| 6000 x 4000 | 24 | photo | A 24 megapixel frame from a full-frame or APS-C camera, the native output of most mirrorless bodies |
About the 3:2 ratio
3:2 is 3 units wide for every 2 tall, decimal 1.5. It is the classic 35mm film frame (36 by 24 millimetres) and the sensor shape of almost every DSLR and mirrorless camera, full-frame and APS-C alike, so a straight-out-of-camera photo is 3:2: 6000 by 4000 pixels on a 24 megapixel body, 8256 by 5504 on a 45 megapixel one. The 4 by 6 inch print, the most common photo print size, is also 3:2.
Beyond cameras, Microsoft's Surface laptops and tablets use 3:2 screens (2256 by 1504, 2880 by 1920, 3000 by 2000). On social, 3:2 posts uncropped on every feed but shows shorter than 4:3 or 1:1 at the same width. It is a common blog and stock-photo shape because the photo comes out of the camera that way.
6:4, 9:6, 12:8, 15:10 and 30:20 are all the same ratio written differently, which is why 4 by 6 and 8 by 12 inch prints fit a 3:2 photo but 5 by 7 (7:5) and 8 by 10 (5:4) do not. Cropping 3:2 to 16:9 cuts 16 percent of the height; to 4:3 cuts 11 percent of the width; to 5:4 cuts 17 percent of the width; to 1:1 cuts 33 percent of the width. Common sizes: 1620 by 1080, 1500 by 1000, 3000 by 2000, 6000 by 4000.
Questions about 3:2
Yes. 6 divided by 4 is 1.5, and so is 3 divided by 2; 6:4 is just the unreduced form, which is why a 6 by 4 inch print fits a 3:2 camera photo without cropping. 9:6, 12:8 and 15:10 are the same ratio too. 5 by 7 and 8 by 10 prints are not, and will crop the long side.
1620 by 1080 or 1500 by 1000 for web use, 3000 by 2000 for a large blog image, 6000 by 4000 straight from a 24 megapixel camera. Divide the width by 3 and multiply by 2 for the height, or multiply the height by 1.5 for the width.
Because the sensor is 3:2. It inherited the shape of the 35mm film frame, 36 by 24 millimetres, and every full-frame and APS-C camera keeps it so that lenses, prints and viewfinders match. Phones and Micro Four Thirds cameras use 4:3 sensors instead, which is why phone photos are a little squarer.
