About the 4:1 ratio

4:1 is 4 units wide for every 1 tall, the widest ratio on this list. It exists on social because of the LinkedIn personal profile banner, which LinkedIn specifies at 1584 by 396 pixels (both divide by 396). LinkedIn company page covers are a different, even wider shape at 1128 by 191, so do not reuse one for the other.

On a desktop profile the banner sits behind the round profile photo, which covers the lower left corner, and in the mobile app the banner is cropped tighter at the sides, so treat the middle 60 percent of the width as the only reliable area for text. A 4:1 strip is also a common shape for website announcement bars and email headers, and YouTube channel art templates are built around a safe strip close to 4:1 in the middle of the 2560 by 1440 canvas.

Cropping 4:1 to 3:1 (the X header) cuts 25 percent of the width; to 2:1 cuts 50 percent; to 16:9 keeps only 44 percent of the width, so a banner rarely survives as a post image. Design the banner as a background with one short line of text rather than a photo you also need elsewhere. Common sizes: 1584 by 396, 3168 by 792 for a 2x export, 2000 by 500 and 1200 by 300.

Questions about 4:1

  • 1584 by 396, the LinkedIn personal banner size, is the common answer. 3168 by 792 is the same ratio at 2x, and 2000 by 500 or 1200 by 300 work for wide website strips. Divide the width by 4 to get the height.

  • Yes, exactly: 1584 divided by 396 is 4, since 396 times 4 is 1584. It is LinkedIn's recommended size for the personal profile background image. The company page cover is a different size, 1128 by 191, which is about 5.9:1, so the two are not interchangeable.

  • The LinkedIn app shows a narrower slice of the 4:1 banner than the desktop site, and on both the round profile photo covers the lower left. Anything within about 20 percent of either edge or in the bottom left can disappear. Keep text and logos in the middle 60 percent of the width and the upper two thirds.
