Every size below reduces to 4:3. Each links to its own page.
| Size | Megapixels | Type | Used by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 480 x 360 | 0.17 | video | The 360p video size YouTube defaulted to before widescreen, and the medium thumbnail its API still returns |
| 640 x 480 | 0.31 | screen | VGA, the resolution that fixed 4:3 as the shape of computing for a decade |
| 800 x 600 | 0.48 | screen | SVGA, the size web pages were built for through the late 1990s |
| 1024 x 768 | 0.79 | screen | XGA, the standard monitor resolution of the early 2000s and the screen of the first iPad |
| 1200 x 900 | 1.08 | social | Google Business Profile Post |
| 1440 x 1080 | 1.56 | social | 4:3 at the height feeds display, so it is the landscape option that gives up the least screen against a portrait post |
| 1600 x 1200 | 1.92 | screen | UXGA, a 2 megapixel 4:3 size that was the top of the monitor range before widescreen and is still the output of document scanners and older compact cameras |
| 2048 x 1536 | 3.15 | screen | The Retina iPad screen, 3 megapixels at 4:3, and a common export size for images that have to stay sharp on a tablet |
| 4000 x 3000 | 12 | photo | A 12 megapixel photo from a phone or a Micro Four Thirds camera, the size most people see in the file properties of a picture they just took |

About the 4:3 ratio
4:3 is 4 units wide for every 3 tall, decimal 1.33. It was the shape of television and computer monitors for 50 years, so 640 by 480, 800 by 600, 1024 by 768 and 1600 by 1200 pixels are all 4:3. Every iPad screen is 4:3 (2048 by 1536 and up), as are Micro Four Thirds cameras, most compact cameras and phone photos: a 12 megapixel iPhone photo is 4032 by 3024.
On social it is a landscape option rather than a target. Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn all display 4:3 uncropped in the feed, but the image is shorter on screen than a 4:5 or square post at the same width. Its main modern home is presentations (the older PowerPoint default was 4:3; new decks are 16:9) and any slide or document that will be printed on letter paper, which is close to 4:3 in landscape.
Cropping 4:3 to 16:9 removes 25 percent of the height, which is what a widescreen TV does to old footage; to 3:2 removes 11 percent of the height; to 1:1 removes 25 percent of the width. Going the other way, a 16:9 frame cut to 4:3 keeps only 75 percent of its width. Common sizes: 1440 by 1080, 1024 by 768, 1600 by 1200, 2048 by 1536, 4032 by 3024.
Questions about 4:3
1440 by 1080 for a social image; 1024 by 768, 1600 by 1200 and 2048 by 1536 for screens; 4032 by 3024 for a 12 megapixel phone photo. Divide the width by 4 and multiply by 3 to get the height. 640 by 480 (VGA) is the smallest size people still search for.
Yes. 1024 and 768 both divide by 256, leaving 4 and 3. It was the standard monitor resolution of the early 2000s (XGA) and the pixel size of the first iPad's screen, which is why so many older slide decks, screenshots and embedded videos are that shape.
16:9 is a third wider at the same height. Fitting a 4:3 image onto a 16:9 screen either leaves bars on the sides (pillarboxing) or crops 25 percent of the image's height. Fitting 16:9 footage into a 4:3 frame crops 25 percent of its width. Neither converts to the other without losing something.
