About the 3:1 ratio

3:1 is 3 units wide for every 1 tall, a strip 3 times wider than it is high. Its one important home is the X (Twitter) header image at 1500 by 500 pixels, a size that has not changed since 2014. Nothing else in mainstream social uses exactly 3:1, so most people meet the ratio only when they design that header.

The header is shown at different widths on desktop and in the app, and the round profile picture overlaps its lower left corner, so the ratio tells you the shape but not the safe area. On desktop the visible header is closer to the full 3:1 than in the mobile app, which trims the top and bottom slightly. Panoramic photos and email banners are often near 3:1 as well (a 600 by 200 email header is exactly 3:1), and some website hero strips use it.

Cropping 3:1 to 2:1 keeps 67 percent of the width; to 16:9 keeps 59 percent; to 4:1 (the LinkedIn banner) cuts 25 percent of the height, so one strip can serve both headers if the subject sits in the middle 1500 by 375. Common sizes: 1500 by 500, 3000 by 1000, 1200 by 400, 600 by 200 and 1800 by 600.

Questions about 3:1

  • 1500 by 500, the X header size, is the one people search for. 3000 by 1000 gives a 2x export, and 1200 by 400 or 600 by 200 suit email and website banners. Divide the width by 3 for the height: 1800 wide is 600 tall.

  • Yes. 1500 divided by 500 is exactly 3. X has recommended 1500 by 500 for the header image since 2014, and it still fits both the desktop and app header. Upload a PNG or a high-quality JPG, and keep text out of the lower left where the profile photo sits.
