About 1080 x 1920

1080 by 1920 is one phone screen, which means the app's own interface is drawn on top of your image rather than beside it. On Instagram Stories the top 250 pixels carry the progress bars and account row and the bottom 340 carry the reply field; on Reels and TikTok the right edge stacks the action buttons and the bottom fills with caption text. The area you can rely on is the middle 1080 by 1330.

Vertical files are also the ones people export at the wrong size most often, because phone screens are taller than 9:16 now. A 1080 by 2400 screen shows a 1080 by 1920 story with a small letterbox or a slight zoom, depending on the app. Designing to 9:16 and keeping the safe area generous is what makes that difference invisible.

Questions

  • Roughly the middle 1080 by 1330 pixels. Leave about 250 pixels clear at the top for the progress bar and account row, about 340 at the bottom for the reply field and captions, and 120 pixels in from the right edge where Reels and TikTok stack their buttons.

  • Yes, if the layout respects the worst case of all three. TikTok's caption block is taller than Instagram's, so keep the bottom 400 pixels free, and keep the right 120 pixels clear for the button column. Anything inside that survives on every app.
